Living in Tri-Cities / Northeast Tennessee
Northeast Tennessee's Tri-Cities -- Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol -- anchor a region built around three real, distinct single-employer identities. Johnson City, this region's price leader ($350,000, up a strong 11.2% YoY), is home to East Tennessee State University, including the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, one of only two public medical schools in Tennessee and ranked No. 2 nationally for graduates serving medically underserved areas. Kingsport is anchored directly by Eastman Chemical Company's actual global corporate headquarters, a roughly 14,000-employee chemical manufacturer founded in 1920. And Bristol, despite Bristol Motor Speedway's substantial economic footprint (more than $417 million in direct impact from 2012-2014 alone, plus $1.4 billion in indirect regional impact) and its legendary NASCAR reputation, runs as this region's most affordable core city ($264,756, 35% below the national average). Elizabethton, Greeneville (home and burial site of President Andrew Johnson), and Morristown fill out this region's more rural, affordable outer tier. Tri-Cities Regional Airport, serving all six places, set a passenger record in July 2025 and continues expanding its route network into 2026.
