Living in Piedmont Triad
The Piedmont Triad -- Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, plus Kernersville and Burlington -- is a genuinely affordable, mid-size urban region built on a shared throughline: each city has reinvented a legacy manufacturing identity into a newer economic base, rather than the region running on one dominant, uniform industry. Greensboro pairs a growing logistics and aerospace cluster at Piedmont Triad International Airport (FedEx Express, Honda Aircraft Company's world headquarters) with a major new $5.9 billion Toyota battery-manufacturing megasite. Winston-Salem's transition is the most complete: a former tobacco-manufacturing company town rebuilt into the Innovation Quarter, a biotech and research district now anchoring a 35,000-plus-job combined healthcare/biotech employment base. High Point never left its founding industry -- the twice-yearly High Point Market remains the largest furniture trade show in the world, and High Point University has posted a record enrollment every year since 2005. Kernersville sits at the literal geographic midpoint of the Triad, offering genuine commute flexibility between Greensboro and Winston-Salem, while Burlington, further east toward Durham, offers the region's lowest prices and its own real anchor in LabCorp, headquartered there. All five cities post home prices in a tight, well-below-national-median band, connected by Interstate 40 and served by one shared regional airport.
