Living in Erie & the Oil Region

This region pairs Erie -- Pennsylvania's only Great Lakes city, and home to Presque Isle State Park, the state's most-visited state park with more than four million annual visitors and the only surf swimming in Pennsylvania -- with the historic Oil Region to its south, the actual birthplace of the modern global oil industry. Edwin Drake drilled the Drake Well in Titusville in 1859, the first commercial oil well in the United States, and that history remains a real, visible part of Titusville and neighboring Oil City's civic identity today, preserved at the Drake Well Museum. Meadville, the Crawford County seat and home to Allegheny College, offers a distinct college-town rhythm within the same broader geography. Erie's housing runs meaningfully higher than its three smaller neighbors, and its direct Lake Erie position brings real, significant lake-effect snow unique to this region within Pennsylvania's coverage. Erie International Airport (ERI) is the region's only commercial airport, with Pittsburgh International as the fuller-service alternative for movers elsewhere in the region.
