Leland sits about 10 minutes from downtown Wilmington across the Cape Fear River, while Southport sits roughly 30 minutes south at the river's mouth, connected to Wilmington via US-17/NC-133 and to the barrier islands via its own ferry system (a passenger ferry to Bald Head Island, and the NCDOT Southport-Fort Fisher vehicle ferry, running since 1965).
